Rainer Hersch with the WSO

Rainer Hersch presents new orchestra show:
Last Night of the Proms...Ever!
Rainer Hersch, musician, comedian and conductor
Lindsay Sutherland Boal, soprano soloist
Friday, March 27 at 8pm
Saturday, March 28 at 8pm
Sunday, March 29 at 2pm
’ÄúYou really have to see (Hersch) live to appreciate how skillfully he can weave together music and mirth. And the beauty of it is that you don't have to know your Bach from your Elgar to appreciate the punch lines."
- Evening Standard Comedy Choice
A perennial favourite of Winnipeg Symphony and Fringe Festival audiences, Rainer Hersch (click for bio) returns to the river city, following a year hiatus, to perform a brand new show with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. The Last Night of the Proms’ĶEver! pokes fun at all things British and musical and parodies the jewel of the British concert season, the BBC Proms**.
Though Britain has no official national anthem, several songs have made their way in to the heart of British patriotic repertoire ’Äì Land of Hope and Glory, Rule Britannia, God Save the Queen, Danny Boy and Scotland the Brave ’Äì and Rainer (respectfully) takes aim at them all.
With the help of the top-notch WSO musicians and soprano Lindsay Sutherland Boal (click for bio), Rainer will navigate the world of ’Äòpomp and circumstance’Äô that is British classical music. Whether you know anything about classical music or not makes no difference ’Äì maestro Rainer Hersch presents a program of truly classic comedy.
Caring for the Caregivers
This concert, an uplifting mix of music and comedy, is also an opportunity for the WSO to honour Winnipeg healthcare workers for their outstanding contributions to our community. Thanks to generous support from Manitoba Lotteries Corporation Great-West Life and Manitoba Artists in Healthcare, the WSO has invited these caregivers to the Friday night performance.
Ticket Info
Tickets for Rainer Hersch’Äôs Last Night of the Proms range from $28.50 to $65.00 and are available through the WSO box office at 949-3999, online at www.wso.mb.ca or at any Ticketmaster outlet.
As a thank-you for their hard work and dedication to our community, Winnipeg firefighters, police and paramedics may purchase tickets for any of the three performances for $25 (best available seats, excluding loge).
**The BBC Proms is an eight-week concert series featuring daily classical music events throughout London that has been a tradition for over one hundred years. The Last Night of the Proms concert features light classics and the most well-loved and patriotic of British music, including Elgar’Äôs Pomp and Circumstance Marches.

Edmonton, AB ’Ķ Calling all buckaroos and buckarettes! Come ride the happy trails by the cool water and the tumblin’Äô tumbleweeds and indulge in the comical and whimsical world of the singing cowboy. Biographies

For thirty years, Riders in the Sky have been keepers of the flame passed on by the Sons of the Pioneers, Gene Autry and Roy Rogers, reviving and revitalizing Western music. And while remaining true to the integrity of the genre, they have themselves become modern-day icons by branding it with their own legendary wacky humour and way-out Western wit, and all along encouraging buckaroos and buckarettes to live life ’ÄúThe Cowboy Way!’Äù

Riders In The Sky are stars of the stage, screen, the Grand Ole Opry, National Public Radio, XM Satellite Radio, Saturday morning TV, and are the only exclusively Western artist to have won a Grammy Award. They truly are "America's Favorite Cowboys!"

As a classic cowboy quartet, the trail has led them to heights they could have never predicted. The Riders have chalked up over 5,400 concert appearances in all 50 states and 10 countries, appearing in venues everywhere from the Nashville National Guard Armory to Carnegie Hall, and from county fairs to the Hollywood Bowl. Their cowboy charisma and comedic flair made them naturals for TV, and landed them their own weekly show on TNN, as well as a Saturday morning series on CBS. They have been guests on countless TV specials, documentaries and variety shows, appearing with everyone from Barney to Penn & Teller. And their animated likenesses have shared the screen with Daffy Duck on the Cartoon Network, and the Disney Channel’Äôs Stanley.

This is Riders in the Sky’Äôs debut with the ESO, as well as their Canadian debut.

Hilarious Trio Take a Ride They'll Never Forget in HELLEVATOR!

HELLAVATOR

Going’Ķdown?

’ÄúSo basically this means we have no flashlight, it’Äôs pitch black, it’Äôs 3 o’Äôclock in the morning, and we’Äôre stuck in an elevator on the 30th floor of this second-rate hotel? Life is good.’Äù

HELLAVATOR PRODUCTIONS presents a site-specific production of an insane new comedy by award-winning playwright Ned Cox. The site?’Ķ a 1930s freight elevator located in the old Warshaw’Äôs building at 3861, boul. St-Laurent.

Alain Goulem directs ’ÄòDream Team’Äô Alex Haber, Neil Napier, and Michel Perron as two tourists and a maintenance worker trapped in a broken-down elevator on the 30th floor of a has-been hotel. Will they ever get it moving again? One catch: if they do, the only way they’Äôre going is down ’Äì way, waaaaaaaay down! And is the janitor what he seems, or is that sulphur we smell?

’ÄúSo what are we supposed to do? Any ideas?’Äù

’ÄúWe could make the best of it.’Äù

’ÄúHow do you make the best of being stuck in an elevator?’Äù

’ÄúOh, a little music, a little laughter’Ķ’Äù

As for the subject matter, the play’Äôs author, Ned Cox says, ’Äúyears ago I was stuck for 11 hours in an elevator. I guess this play is my revenge upon all elevators that possess the diabolical power to mess up our lives at any moment.’Äù Cox goes on to warn audiences not to expect the normal first few minutes: ’Äúthe elevator is in total blackout ’Äì they won’Äôt even see the characters until they can get the power back on!’Äù

’ÄúWhat, were you dabbling in physics? Did you think ’ÄòI know’Ķ we’Äôre moving at long last ’Äì now’Äôs the perfect time to see if that little red button will bring us to a screaming halt AGAIN?!’Äô’Äù

HELLAVATOR was developed as part of the Playwrights Unit program at Playwrights Workshop Montreal. Cox explains: ’ÄúAlex Haber, a member of the Playwrights Unit, read the part of Wendy as I brought in draft after draft. She was so perfect for the part that I begged her to be in the cast! This is the funniest cast I’Äôve ever worked with!’Äù

’ÄúYou haven’Äôt bought me one present in our two years together!’Äô’Äù

’ÄúI gave you a Cuisinart!’Äù

’ÄúYou bought it in a garage sale!’Äù

’ÄúBecause it was a Classic Model! They last a lifetime!

The play will be performed with the actors actually trapped in an old-fashioned working service elevator. The audience of 25 will watch the action, seated in a small lobby, inches from the elevator doors. Set and lighting design is by the multi-talented Sarah Yaffe with sound design by director, Al Goulem, and costumes a company collaboration.

It is very important to note that the number of seats is extremely limited, with tickets being sold ONLY at the venue the night of the performance.

MEDIA CALL

This is an opportunity for still and TV cameras to capture a scene from the play, for radio to record sound clips as well as for interviews with the playwright/actors.

Find Me a Primitive Man, Cabaret Juste Pour Rire

Sirensongs presents

Find Me a Primitive Man

Written by and starring Marysia

June 14-21, Cabaret Juste Pour Rire

6 shows only!

A scintillating cocktail of comedy and cabaret.

MONTREAL June 2008- Making her Canadian debut, London's talented Marysia is thrilled to bring Find Me a Primitive Man to the Montreal St-Ambroise Fringe Festival after her popular Edinburgh run. From the Cole Porter title tune to original comedy songs, the songs lurch from musical excellence to debauched bitterness. Don't miss Marysia's ludicrous logic, wicked observations and cheeky chansons d'amour in this jazzy, stand-up comedy delight.

In Find Me a Primitive Man, outrageous British beauty Lady Farquahr-Merkin (an ex-showgirl who managed to marry and divorce a minor member of the royal family) offers tips and wicked reminiscences on dating sports stars, European men and other minor members of the Royal Family. Be very scared, now she has come to Montreal to find a real man! Marysia is excited about her first visit to Canada, "I have been reading books on how to be a Canadian and how to date a Canadian- apparently I need to make out in a canoe."

Find Me a Primitive Man is a terrific blend of Marysia's talents; "I love to combine my years of singing cabaret with stand-up comedy. Cabaret is all about fun mixed with slightly uncomfortable truths."

From fatally flawed advice on dress sense ("Weddings are the best places to hook up; I think what puts the men off is my wedding dress.") and behaviour, ("I never go all the way on a first date, I make them wait until the second before I let them get the video camera out.") her memorable tips will last a lifetime.

Whether Marysia is doing mellow jazz or camp cabaret, her greatest passion is ensuring audiences have a great time. She hopes people come away having had a blast, learning some of the best/worst pick-up lines and knowing when to run from the opposite sex! Offer your best pick-up line and win a copy of Marysia's latest cd, If You Can't Make Love, Make Coffee. Pick-up lines can also be submitted via info@sirensongs.co.uk and http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=17308871428. If You Can't Make Love, Make Coffee, Marysia's debut cd, shows off her songs and jazz arrangements, highlighting her sophisticated, soulful brand of music.

Don't miss the Out-of-Towner Fringe-for-All where artists from out-of-town preview their shows. Be the first to see Marysia on stage in Montreal. Thurs. June 12, 10pm, Just for Laughs Studio, 2109 St. Laurent. FREE for everyone.

For media, this is an occasion for camera footage, interviews and still photography.

About Marysia

After Marysia's successful two shows a day at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2007 with Find Me a Primitive Man and also hosting The Midnight Carousel, Marysia has turned her sights on Montreal. She is a former bond dealer who left the trading floor for the stage. Marysia has been performing all her life, most recently working as a jazz/cabaret singer and stand-up comic in UK venues. Her series of themed cabaret shows continue to run successfully. Highlights include Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2006 with her show Marysia's Slightly Bitter and Twisted Lessons In Love, complete with cartoons, lectern and a live band; the Lawn Tennis Association Players Party June 07, the All About My Men, All About My Mother Europride film and cabaret night; headlining the Proud Gallery's New Years Eve cabaret party and her various sell-out gigs in London's top clubs. Marysia will next be performing her original songs and cabaret stylings in Paris, Autumn 2008. www.sirensongs.co.uk www.myspace.com/sirensongsuk
