Concert - Matt Haimovitz et DJ Olive

MATT HAIMOVITZ, GEOFFREY BURLESON and DJ OLIVE

The fabulous Pink Martini, “beautiful and sophisticated,” as declared by The New Yorker, returns to Toronto after a highly successful debut on March of 2008. In writing about the group’s last appearance in March, the Toronto Star wrote, "Pink Martini represents all that Toronto aspires to - sophistication, cosmopolitanism, and a type of delight that sometimes involves dressing up and carousing…with its heterogeneous tastes and facility in languages, the pop orchestra might have sprung from our own diverse metropolis, but hails instead from Portland, Oregon.” And the National Post wrote, "Like the cocktail they're named after, Pink Martini packs a punch when you get past the frothy sweetness…It's music to dress up for, in heels and pearls; music that gets the ballroom buzzing."

The Portland, Oregon-based “little orchestra” was founded in 1994 by Lauderdale, a Harvard graduate and classically trained pianist, to perform at political fundraisers for progressive causes such as civil rights, the environment, affordable housing and public broadcasting. In the years following, Pink Martini grew from four musicians to its current twelve, and has gone on to perform its multilingual repertoire on concert stages and with symphony orchestras throughout Europe, Asia, Greece, Turkey, Lebanon, Canada and the United States. In the US, the band has performed with such symphony orchestras as the Boston Pops, the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic; and special engagements have included the grand opening of the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s new Frank Gehry designed Walt Disney Concert Hall; the opening party of the New York Museum of Modern Art; and the 100th birthday celebration for the William Morris Agency with soul legend Al Green.

“Pink Martini is like a romantic Hollywood musical of the 1940s or ‘50s – but with a global perspective which is modern,” says founder and artistic director Thomas M. Lauderdale. “We bring melodies and rhythms from different parts of the world together to create something which is new and beautiful. All band members have studied different languages and music from different parts of the world, so because everyone in the band contributes in the writing and arranging of songs, the repertoire is wildly diverse. At one moment, you feel like you’re in the middle of a samba parade in Rio de Janeiro, and in the next moment, you are suddenly in a French music hall of the 1930s or in a palazzo in Napoli. It’s like an urban musical travelogue,” says Lauderdale.

Pink Martini’s debut album, Sympathique, was released in 1997 on the band’s own label Heinz Records (named after Lauderdale’s dog) and quickly became an international phenomenon, garnering the group nominations for “Song of the Year” and “Best New Artist” in France’s Victoires de la Musique Awards. Seven long years later the high-anticipated follow-up, Hang on Little Tomato, was released and climbed to #1 on Amazon.com’s best sellers list. A new CD is in the works (details to come before the June concert date), but until then, Pink Martini’s last album was Hey Eugene!, released in May 2007. This recording is a twelve-track sonic journey that travels the globe with uplifting songs of hope and beauty. The title track “Hey Eugene,” an audience favourite for years, is delivered with sultry grace by lead singer China Forbes, who wrote the song about a boy she met at a party who asked for her number and then never called.

The National Parcs excite the senses with new live show

THE NATIONAL PARCS EXCITE THE SENSES WITH NEW LIVE SHOW

National Tour To Kick off June 12th, 2008

Toronto, ON – Hot on the heels of the successful release of their debut album Timbervision, Montreal based band The National Parcs are gearing up for their first national tour. The tour will kick off in Ottawa on June 12th, 2008 with a performance at the Mercury Lounge, and take the band west. The tour will end in their hometown of Montreal with a performance on August 3rd at the Osheaga Music & Arts Festival. As part of their tour, fans can also look forward to seeing The National Parcs when they perform at the TD Canada Trust Toronto Jazz Festival and the Calgary Jazz Festival.

"This is the first national tour for us as a band and we are so excited. We spent two years recording the album out in nature, and this is the result of our culminated efforts," says
Vincent Letellier
.

Recognized for their unique sound and audiovisual experience, The National Parcs received a Montreal Independent Music Initiative (MIMI) award in March of this year for the "Montreal Band Most Deserving of National Tour Support".
Their debut album Timbervision
was an audio/visual collaboration, as band member Ian Cameron videotaped the creation and audio recording of the natural symphony created by Quebec's wilderness. Back in the studio, the audio/video samples were the building blocks of the album, laying down the sounds with the tracks to produce a richly textured multi-layered album of high-energy beats and intense spoken verse, integrated with the natural sounds of the great outdoors. The visual recordings were edited to create videos for select tracks and these were packaged with the album to create a CD/DVD set like nothing else in the market.

Their first tour as a band, the live performance will feature video footage from the DVD choreographed with the live stage performance and synchronized lighting with the audio and video samples.
Music lovers will be thrilled as The National Parcs combine these elements into a live show experience for the eyes, ears and soul.

"Totally original, and thoroughly invigorating." –
The Montreal Gazette

"The National Parcs keep their sound fun, funky and pop savvy." –

"POPERA" TRIO DESTINO ENCHANTS AUDIENCES WITH THEIR MUSICAL FUSION

Toronto, ON – "Popera" powerhouse group Destino are set to release their new album Forte on July 8, 2008. The group's sound, coined "popera", combines pop and opera with the musical influences of R&B, soul, jazz and gospel. The music is passionate and captivating, and is already garnering the group a dedicated fanbase. A union of quiet, melodic harmonies and fiery solos, the Vancouver trio is expanding the musical landscape through the blending of their unique sound and incredibly commanding vocals, demonstrated with the first single "Show Me The Way Back To Your Heart", written by music sensation Diane Warren.
"We want to expand the scope and opinion that people have of opera music and make it more accessible to those who might not think about listening to it. Our sound allows fans of both opera and pop to enjoy a mix of different types of music, and it's a style they won't quickly forget!" says Joey Niceforo.
Simply put, the voices of Destino consistently mesmerize audiences with their live performances. With such a diverse vocal range, Leon Leontaridis, Joey Niceforo and Paul Ouellette allure and intrigue their fans with the unique amalgamation of their classic voices and stylish, elegant looks. All classically trained operatic singers, they exude sophistication on stage, performing in English, French, Italian and Spanish. It was only by a chance encounter that the trio first met when they were all hired to work on a project together. It wasn't long before their chemistry was apparent. Discovering that their individual talents complemented each other, their destiny as a group was sealed.
Each member of the group had enjoyed success on an individual level prior to Destino. Leontaridis, who has studied voice from the age of eight, has worked under such renowned instructors as soprano Wendy Nielson and Theodore Baerg. He has performed as Giuseppe in La Traviata, in addition to performing in La Boheme and Filumena. Niceforo made his professional stage debut in Toronto at the 'Toronto Opera in Concert's Canadian Gala Concert'. He recently shared the stage with notable tenor Salvatore Licitra at a gala in New York City. In addition to Destino, Ouellette is part of the Vancouver Opera Touring Ensemble and has performed in 150 shows as Tamino the lead character from the German Opera The Magic Flute. A three-time consecutive winner of the Western district level of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, Ouellette continues to participate in concerts, recitals, film and television work in British Columbia.
"Releasing a debut album as a musician is like an initiation into the music world. It's taking it to another level of just being a performer on a stage to exposing yourself worldwide for all to enjoy, criticize, love or hate and that's a big step of faith. It's exciting and scary at the same time", says Leontaridis.
