Le fondateur de La Scena Musicale Wah Keung Chan honoré par le Collège Vanier

Le 7 avril 2008 / La Scène Musicale (LSM) est heureuse d’annoncer que le fondateur et président de l’organisme Wah Keung Chan sera honoré lors du 10^e concert-bénéfice Big Band annuel du Collège Vanier, qui aura lieu le lundi 14 avril à 19 h 30 dans l’auditorium du collège. Chaque année, cet événement rend hommage aux artistes musiciens qui ont laissé leur marque dans la communauté. La mission de LSM, soit la promotion de la musique classique et du jazz au Canada, allant de succès en succès, cet honneur semble particulièrement mérité par Wah Keung, lui-même un ancien de Vanier.

« Cette année, nous avons choisi Wah Keung Chan, explique Nadia Turbide, coordonnatrice du département de musique de Vanier, parce que son magazine, distribué dans tout Montréal, est unique. La Scena Musicale offre un calendrier mensuel exhaustif des événements musicaux dans la ville ainsi que des entrevues et des articles de fond sur les musiciens, les chefs et les compositeurs. C’est une véritable mine d’or d’information sur la musique. Aucun autre magazine ne couvre la musique de façon aussi complète. »

Wah Keung a toujours fait preuve de leadership et d'innovation : dès ses années d’études au Collège Vanier, il a fondé le club de mathématique et le concours de mathématique de Vanier, pour lesquels il a reçu un prix d’excellence à la remise des diplômes. « Je suis très honoré de recevoir cette reconnaissance, dit Wah Keung. Le mentorat que j’ai reçu à Vanier a aidé à former mon sens du leadership et à me convaincre que mes initiatives pouvaient faire une différence réelle. » À l’Université McGill, il a reçu le prix Scarlet Key pour avoir été cofondateur du Live Wire, un journal pour les étudiants en génie électrique, et pour son leadership sur le campus. Il a par la suite aidé à revigorer la Scarlet Key Society en organisant la participation annuelle de l’université à la course Terry Fox. En septembre 1996, Wah Keung a conjugué son expérience en édition, son amour de la musique classique, ses connaissances en informatique et son dévouement exceptionnel pour se lancer dans son projet le plus ambitieux, la publication d’un magazine gratuit sur la musique classique, La Scena Musicale, qu’il continue de diriger comme éditeur et rédacteur en chef. Depuis, il a élargi la mission de cet organisme à but non lucratif, la promotion de la musique classique, en lançant le magazine en anglais The Music Scene, La Scena Musicale Online, un site Web couronné de nombreux prix (www.scena.org) et, en septembre 2007, La SCENA, le seul magazine de Montréal consacré aux arts et à la culture. En 2007, Wah Keung Chan a obtenu une mention d’honneur aux Prix du magazine canadien (catégorie Arts et spectacles) pour son article « L’aura Nagano » paru dans le numéro de décembre 2006/janvier 2007 de LSM (vol. 12, n^o 4).

La soirée sera animée par la légende montréalaise du jazz, le pianiste Oliver Jones, et des hommages seront rendus au contreténor de renommée mondiale Daniel Taylor, au mécène montréalais Noel Spinelli et à la professeure de mathématiques maintenant à la retraite Carole Channer, premier mentor de Wah Keung. Parmi les artistes invités se trouveront la chanteuse Jeri Brown, qui enregistre sur l’étiquette Justin Time, le Vanier Stage Band sous la direction de Jocelyn Couture et le J.L. Big Band – qui compte certains des meilleurs musiciens de jazz de Montréal – dirigé par Christopher Smith.

Les profits de la soirée permettront au Collège Vanier d’offrir des bourses aux meilleurs étudiants en musique de l’école; les présentations de ces bourses aux récipiendaires de 2008 se feront lors de l’événement. Les billets coûtent 20 $. On peut se les procurer soit à l’atelier d’imprimerie du collège, soit à la porte le soir du concert.

La Scena Musicale Founder Wah Keung Chan to be Honoured by Vanier College

April 7, 2008 / La Scène Musicale (LSM) is pleased to announce that the organization’s founder and president Wah Keung Chan will be honoured at Vanier College’s 10^th Annual Big Band Benefit Concert, which will take place on Monday, April 14 at 7:30 PM in the school’s auditorium. Every year, this event pays tribute to musical artists who have made a lasting impact on the community at large. As LSM’s mission of promoting classical music and jazz throughout Canada continues to succeed, this honour seems particularly fitting for Wah Keung, who is himself a Vanier alumnus.

Vanier Music Department coordinator Nadia Turbide explains: "This year we chose Wah Keung Chan, because his magazine which is distributed all over Montreal, is a one-of-a-kind monthly listing of musical events along interviews and articles on musicians, conductors and composers in Montreal. La Scena Musicale is a gold mine of information on musical events; no other local magazine covers music in such a comprehensive way."

Wah Keung has a history of leadership and innovation that dates back to his days at Vanier, where he founded the Vanier Math Club and the Vanier Math Competition, for which he received a Vanier Student Life Award upon graduation. “I am very honoured and touched to receive this recognition,” says Wah Keung. “The mentorship I received at Vanier helped shape my sense of leadership and the idea that I could make a real difference through my initiatives.” At McGill University, he received the Scarlet Key Award for co-founding The Live Wire, a news/journal for electrical engineering students, and for his leadership on campus. He subsequently helped reinvigorate the Scarlet Key Society by starting the university’s regular participation in the Terry Fox Run. In September 1996, Wah Keung brought his publishing experience, love of classical music, knowledge of computers and sense of volunteerism to his most ambitious project, the publication of a free classical music magazine, La Scena Musicale, which he continues to run as publisher and editor-in-chief. Since then, he has expanded the non-profit charity’s mission of promoting classical music by launching the all-English The Music Scene, La Scena Musicale Online, an award-winning website which can be found at www.scena.org, and in September 2007, La SCENA, Montreal’s only arts and culture magazine. Recently, Wah Keung was the recipient of an Honourable Mention at the 2006 National Magazine Awards (Arts and Entertainment Category) for his critical profile “The Nagano Mystique,” published in the December 2006/January 2007 issue of LSM (Vol. 12.4).

The evening’s festivities will be hosted by Montreal jazz piano legend Oliver Jones, while tributes will be given by internationally renowned countertenor Daniel Taylor, local philanthropist Noel Spinelli, and retired Vanier math professor Carole Channer, Wah Keung first mentor. Featured performers include Justin Time recording artist Jeri Brown, the Vanier Stage Band under the direction of Jocelyn Couture and the J.L. Big Band, led by Christopher Smith, which is comprised of some of Montreal’s finest jazz musicians.

Proceeds from the evening’s concert allow Vanier College to give bursaries to outstanding music students at the school; presentations of these scholarships to current Vanier students will be part of the event. Tickets for the event are $20 and can be purchased either at the college’s print shop or at the door on the evening of the concert.
