CLEVELAND, September 1, 2009 The Cleveland Orchestra and Music Director Franz Welser-Mst will open the Orchestra's 2009-10 season with a one-night-only performance of Beethoven's stirring Symphony No. 9 ("Choral") at Severance Hall on Saturday, September 26, at 8:30 p.m. This opening-night performance is a benefit concert to support the Orchestra's new Community Music Initiative, which will broaden the Orchestra's connections to the community and provide access to great music for more Northeast Ohioans than ever before.

Vocal soloists for this performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony will be soprano Twyla Robinson, mezzo-soprano Michaela Martens, tenor Frank Lopardo, and bass Raymond Aceto. The Cleveland Orchestra Chorus, prepared by Cleveland Orchestra Director of Choruses Robert Porco, will also take part in the performance.

Since 2004, Twyla Robinson has appeared with The Cleveland Orchestra in works including Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, Haydn's "Lord Nelson" Mass, Mozart's Requiem, the Verdi Requiem, Strauss's Four Last Songs, and in the role of Mrs. Ford in Verdi's Falstaff. Michaela Martens will be making her Cleveland Orchestra debut with this performance. Frank Lopardo previously appeared with the Orchestra in Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 at the Blossom Festival in July 2000, and at Severance Hall in January 2007, a performance recorded live and released on the Deutsche Grammophon label. Raymond Aceto's performances with the Orchestra have included the role of Zuniga in Bizet's Carmen in August 1999, the Verdi Requiem in June 2004, and Janek's Glagolitic Mass in January 2009, with an additional performance at Carnegie Hall the following month.

The Cleveland Orchestra's Community Music Initiative is aimed at diversifying the Orchestra's offerings and reaching more children, adults, teachers, students, musicians, and families in Northeast Ohio than ever before. During the 2009-10 season (and beyond), members of The Cleveland Orchestra will participate in a wide range of educational and community activities throughout Northeast Ohio, including concerts in two Cleveland high schools and a Family Concert at Severance Hall conducted by Franz Welser-Mst; a "Music Mentors" program supporting instrumental music in Cleveland public schools; "Music Masters," supporting high-school band and orchestra programs throughout Northeast Ohio; and "Musical Neighborhoods," a part of PNC's Grow Up Great: A Great Early Start in the Arts program, in which musicians and teachers use music to build school readiness skills for pre-school-aged children in local Head Start programs. These new programs complement The Cleveland Orchestra's already vibrant education and community programs, such as the Learning Through Music school partnership program, the annual free Star-Spangled Spectacular Community Concert at Public Square, the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Concert and Community Open House, youth ensembles, Education Concerts and Family Concerts at Severance Hall, and a host of other programs that have introduced children and families to symphonic music for decades.

Tickets to the September 26 concert go on sale to the general public on Tuesday, September 8. Prices range from $68 to $159. Severance Hall boxes and other selected seats are available in conjunction with a post-concert event hosted by community leaders. Volunteers needed for the 2009-10 Cleveland Orchestra concert and event season at Severance Hall

Severance Hall seeks volunteers to serve as ushers, greeters, ticket takers, tour guides, and store volunteers

CLEVELAND, July 15, 2009 Severance Hall, home of The Cleveland Orchestra, is seeking volunteer ushers, greeters, ticket takers, tour guides, and store volunteers for the 2009-10 season. The season includes evening subscription, matinee, education, family, and holiday concerts by The Cleveland Orchestra; performances by the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra, the Cleveland Pops Orchestra, the Cleveland Institute of Music Orchestra, the Cleveland Youth Wind Symphony, and the Cleveland Womens Orchestra; and many other musical and non-musical events.

Tour guides conduct public and private tours and offer historical and architectural detail about Severance Hall. Store volunteers offer sales assistance in the Cleveland Orchestra Store during weekdays and weekends at concert times.

Severance Hall also seeks middle- and high-school students to join the Junior Volunteer Corps. Students assist at Family Concerts, Musical Rainbow performances, Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra concerts, Holiday concerts, and other special events (mostly daytime performances during the weekend). An orientation and training program prepares students for service as ushers, ticket takers, and Cleveland Orchestra Store volunteers. Adult ushers also serve as mentors.

Severance Hall volunteers are asked to commit for the entire season from September through June, and are required to attend a two-hour training and orientation session in September, at the beginning of the season. Training session dates are September 22 and 24 at 6:00 p.m. and September 24 at 9:00 a.m.

Open interviews for new volunteers will be held at Severance Hall on Friday, August 28, from 5 - 7 p.m. and Saturday, August 29, from 10 a.m. 2 p.m. Stop in any time during these hours to fill out an application, and learn about the program and speak with Front of House Staff members.

While providing excellent customer service, Severance Hall volunteers have the opportunity to hear great music in a beautiful venue, enjoy the company of other music-loving volunteers, and contribute their talents and time to a premier arts organization.

Those interested in more information about volunteering at Severance Hall may call the House Managers Office at Severance Hall at (216) 231-7425.

David Zinman conducts The Cleveland Orchestra

David Zinman conducts The Cleveland Orchestra in Tchaikovskys Symphony No. 5 at the Blossom Festival on August 1

Ingrid Fliter is soloist in the Schumann Piano Concerto

Aspen Academy conductor James Feddeck makes his Cleveland Orchestra debut with a Mendelssohn overture

CLEVELAND, July 13, 2009 David Zinman, music director of the Tonhalle Orchestra in Zurich and music director of the Aspen Music Festival and School in Colorado, will conduct The Cleveland Orchestra in a program featuring Tchaikovskys Symphony No. 5 at the Blossom Festival on Saturday, August 1, at 8:00 p.m. The program also features the Schumann Piano Concerto with pianist Ingrid Fliter as soloist. James Feddeck will make his Cleveland Orchestra debut conducting the opening work on the program, Mendelssohns Overture: The Fair Melusina.

James Feddeck, a participant at the American Academy of Conducting at Aspen for the summers of 2006-2008, and assistant conductor there this summer, was selected to conduct the Orchestra through a partnership between The Cleveland Orchestra and the Aspen Festival and School, where David Zinman created and leads the American Academy of Conducting. In March 2009, Mr. Feddeck was appointed an assistant conductor of The Cleveland Orchestra and music director of the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra, to begin in September 2009.

Argentine pianist Ingrid Fliter, recipient of the 2006 Gilmore Artist Award, one of the most prestigious awards for pianists, made her Cleveland Orchestra debut at the Blossom Festival in August 2007. Ms. Fliter made her major American orchestra debut with the Atlanta Symphony in January 2006, just days after the announcement of her Gilmore Award. Music Director Franz Welser-Mst conducts The Cleveland Orchestra in Shostakovichs Symphony No. 5

Music Director Franz Welser-Mst conducts The Cleveland Orchestra in Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5 at the Blossom Festival on July 18

Nikolaj Znaider is soloist in the Beethoven Violin Concerto

Music Director Franz Welser-Mst will conduct The Cleveland Orchestra in a program featuring Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5 at the Blossom Festival on Saturday, July 18, at 8:00 p.m. The program also will feature Nikolaj Znaider as soloist in Beethoven's Violin Concerto.

Following Mr. Znaider's performance of the Brahms Violin Concerto with The Cleveland Orchestra and guest conductor Pinchas Steinberg in February 2009, the Cleveland Plain Dealer commented, "Znaider met Brahms' challenge with a commanding, Apollonian technique. His bowing was flawless, moving among the strings seamlessly, and the triple-stopped chords in the lengthy first movement were played as precisely as if they had been sounded on a keyboard. Yet there was fire aplenty. Beneath Brahms' hard-fought logic there is a suppressed passion that Znaider emphasized brilliantly in his phrasing and attack."

The July 18 program will begin with Ludwig van Beethoven's Violin Concerto in D major, Opus 61. After intermission, the program concludes with Dmitri Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5 in D minor, opus 47. The Cleveland Orchestra and Mr. Welser-Mst will perform the Shostakovich symphony in four cities during their fall 2009 European Tour/Musikverein Residency, which begins in Toronto, Canada, and takes place from October 20-November 3.
