MONTRAL, le 16 janvier 2009 - Du jeudi 22 au samedi 24 janvier 20 heures, dans le cadre de sa srie musique Circulation, le MAI (Montral, arts interculturels) donne carte blanche au multi-percussionniste montralais Patrick Graham. Accompagn du joueur de vielle roue Ben Grossman (Toronto), du fltiste Kaoru Watanabe (New York) et de la chorgraphe et danseuse Tomomi Morimoto (Montral), M. Graham prsente le spectacle Rhe, une vritable exploration musicale. Ce concert est prsent conjointement au lancement de l'album portant le mme titre, lequel aura lieu le 22 janvier au caf du MAI, sous forme de 5 7 (entre libre).
Rhe est la racine grecque du mot rythme et signifie courant ; courant que suivent d'instinct les trois musiciens, dployant ainsi leur excellente capacit d'improvisation. Ensemble, ils utilisent des instruments traditionnels pour explorer un style sonore davantage exprimental ; vielle roue lectroacoustique et flte japonaise en bambou interagissent avec les percussions japonaises, indiennes et mditerranennes. La danse contemporaine fait cho la fusion entre traditions musicales et exprimentation, prolongeant ses rythmes dans le mouvement corporel.
Musicien prolifique, M. Graham s'est taill une place de choix au sein du paysage musical traditionnel et contemporain. On peut le voir jouer avec diffrents groupes dont Autorickshaw, GaPa, Small World Project et La Nef. Il a enseign l'art des percussions l'quipe de la production Dralion du Cirque du Soleil, ainsi que dans certains conservatoires du Canada, de l'Inde et de la Chine. Sa dmarche artistique s'appuie sur l'exploration des rythmes mditerranens, indiens, irlandais et japonais et sa virtuosit lui permet d'entremler ces multiples influences pour en faire exulter un style musical unique et audacieux. Depuis l'ouverture du MAI en 1999, M. Graham a particip de nombreux projets de danse, de thtre et de musique, comme concepteur sonore ou interprte. Nous sommes heureux de lui offrir cette premire carte blanche.

MONTREAL, January 16, 2009 - From Thursday to Saturday, January 22-24 at 8 p.m., the MAI (Montral, arts interculturels) gives the stage to Montreal-based multi-percussionist Patrick Graham as part of its Circulation music series. Accompanied by hurdy gurdy player and percussionist Ben Grossman (Toronto), flutist Kaoru Watanabe (New York), and dancer-choreographer Tomomi Morimoto (Montreal), Patrick Graham presents Rhe, a veritable musical carpet ride. This concert takes place in conjunction with the launch of its namesake album which will take place on January 22 at the MAI as a 5 7 event (free).
Rhe, the Greek root of rhythm, also means flow. Relying on their instincts, all three musicians ride this flow, showcasing their mastery of improvisation. Their use of traditional instruments allows them to delve into more experimental soundscapes; electroacoustic hurdy gurdy and Japanese bamboo flute play off of Japanese, Indian and Mediterranean rhythms. Contemporary dance echoes this fusion of experimental and traditional elements by extending the rhythms into the realm of movement.
A prolific musician, Patrick Graham holds a privileged place in the traditional and contemporary musical landscape. He can also be seen playing with such groups as Autorickshaw, GaPa, Small World Project, and La Nef. He has taught the art of percussion to the Cirque du Soleil's Dralion production team, as well as in various conservatories in Canada, India, and China. His artistic process rests upon the exploration of Mediterranean, Indian, Irish, and Japanese rhythms, while his virtuosity gives way to a merging of influences that radiates a bold and unique musical style. From the time of the MAI's opening in 1999, Patrick Graham has worked as a sound designer or performer on several dance, theatre, and music projects presented here. We are delighted to give him his first carte blanche at the MAI.
