New Works Calgary presents The Rubbing Stone Ensemble

New Works Calgary presents the debut of The Rubbing Stone Chamber Ensemble:

Jeremy Brown, saxophone; Donovan Seidle, violin; Luciane Cardassi, Piano; and Rod Squance, Percussion.

They will be performing on Monday, Jan. 26, 8 pm at the Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall, Rozsa Centre.

Please join us for a pre-concert chat at 7:30 pm.

The ensemble will be joined by Mary Sullivan (flute), Cedric Blary (clarinet), Christina Davies (cello), Gianneta Baril (harp), and David Eagle (electronics). This concert promises to be the start of a remarkable collaboration.

The ensemble is named after the 'rubbing stone' on Nosehill in Calgary."Bison shed their tattered winter coats by repeatedly rubbing against this glacial erratic, left there during the last glaciation surge 15,000 to 12,000 years ago. The Rubbing Stone stands as a reminder of the bison that sustained those early inhabitants of our city."

The ensemble will premiere new works by Calgary composers Veronica Tapia, Anthony Tan, Laurie Radford and Shelley Marwood. The program also features Rubbing Stone by Calgary composer Hope Lee, Abigail Richardson's Dissolve, Icicle by Robert Aitken and works by Javier Alvarez (Mexico) and Mario Davidovsky (US).

This concert is part of the Happening 2009 University of Calgary New Music Festival which runs January 26-30 at the Rozsa Centre.

Tickets are available in advance at Campus Tickets (220-7202) or at the door: adults $20, seniors and students $15.
