NEW YORK, November 6, 2009: Following the huge success of its Opera in Cinema LIVE in High Definition throughout Europe, Emerging Pictures is pleased to announce the expansion of the program for the 2009-2010 season with six new performances—three from Teatro alla Scala in Milan and three from Barcelona’s Gran Teatre del Liceu.

Opera in Cinema LIVE is part of Emerging Pictures’ ongoing high definition digital cinema presentations of Opera and Ballet Programs from Europe’s most prestigious institutions, now in its third year, reaching audiences in 21 countries worldwide.

LIVE FROM LA SCALA

This season’s first Opera in Cinema LIVE presentation in the United States will be La Scala’s 2010 Opening Night - Monday December 7, 2009, when Daniel Barenboim leads a new production of Georges Bizet’s Carmen starring Jonas Kaufmann, Erwin Schrott, Anita Rachvelishvili and Adriana Damato.

La Scala’s opening night—always December 7, a holiday in the city of Milan, in honor of Sant’Ambrogio, the patron saint of the city—is one of Europe’s most important cultural events, with heads of state, celebrities, as well as Italy’s elite certain to be in attendance.

Tickets to “la Prima della Scala,” as the opening night is referred to in Italy, can cost up to $3200.

US cinema audiences will experience the event in digital HD for $25.
The Carmen broadcast will begin at 12:00 noon Eastern Time, with a LIVE delayed broadcast the same day at 7:30 PM Eastern Time.

LIVE FROM GRAN TEATRE DEL LICEU

The Opera in Cinema LIVE series continues on Tuesday December 22 with a performance of Verdi’s Il Trovatore from the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona.

The Liceu has hosted the greatest talents in opera since its founding in 1847, and is the hometown theater for such Catalan artists as Conchita Supervia, Montserrat Caballé, and Jose Carreras.

The worldwide digital cinema presentations of the operas from Barcelona are the fruit of a new collaboration between Emerging Pictures and the Gran Teatre de Liceu, which has been self-producing its shows in High Definition for the past year and broadcasting them to cinemas in Spain.
