The Gerald W. Lynch Theater at John Jay College Spring 2010 Season

The Gerald W. Lynch Theater at John Jay College announces its Spring 2010 Season at the Gerald W. Lynch Theater at John Jay College, 899 Tenth Avenue, NYC, presenting three series: The Art of Justice, which integrates the arts and issues on justice; Great Music for a Great City, unique explorations of classical music; and Familytime!, bringing the arts to the next generation. The Theater also presents special events this season: The Legacy of Shoah Concert and Film Festival (the American premieres of four documentaries) and Zombie, featuring a special talkback with author Joyce Carol Oates on February 12, 2010.

The Legacy of Shoah Concert and Film Festival

Great Music for a Great City Series

Concert - Saturday, March 27 at 7pm

Film Festival - Sunday, March 28 from 12:30 - 9:30pm

The Legacy of Shoah is a unique and compelling two-day festival of documentary films, lectures and music concert that share the personal experiences of survivors of the Holocaust. The Festival will feature the American premiere of The Forgotten Transports, four films about deportations of Jews to little known concentration camps in Latvia, Belarus, Estonia and Poland, told through the memories of survivors by the award-winning director Lukas Pribyl. The concert will include Schubert's Arpeggione Sonata, Bach's Cello Suite No. 2 in D Minor, Children of the Night by Marion Wiesel, and Forgotten Transports to Poland by Lukas Přibyl. The film Forgotten Transports to Latvia (Lukas Přibyl) will be shown on 12:30pm, 3pm and 5:30pm on March 28, with Distant Journeys (Alfred Radok) at 8pm.

Bloody Bess is the swashbuckling tale of Elizabeth Presberty, daughter to the governor of the island of Tobago, and her transformation into the avenging pirate captain, Bloody Bess. This melodramatic thriller is sure to please with its larger than life characters, action-packed fight scenes, hairpin plot reversals, and sizzling feminist overtones.

The Gerald W. Lynch Theater at John Jay College Presents Celebrating the Birthday and Legacy of Antonin Dvorak

Great Music for a Great City:
Celebrating the Birthday and Legacy of Antonin Dvořak
Saturday, September 12, 2009 at 7:30pm

The Gerald W. Lynch Theater at John Jay College presents the first concert of its Fall 2009 Season - part of the classical music series Great Music for a Great City - Celebrating the Birthday and Legacy of Antonin Dvořak, on Saturday, September 12, 2009 at 7:30pm at the Gerald W. Lynch Theater at John Jay College, 899 Tenth Avenue, NYC. Admission is FREE.

This narrated concert features the Afiara String Quartet as well as Metropolitan Opera soloists Camellia Johnson, soprano, and Terry Cook, bass-baritone, with pianist Caroline Stoessinger.

As Dvořak taught America about its own heritage and spirituals, this concert will present music by composers he influenced as well as his own inspired compositions, including Quintet for Piano and Strings, Opus 91; Gypsy Songs; and selected works by Burleigh, Ellington and Copland, as well as spirituals. The concert will also feature contralto Yvonne Hatchett.

Great Music for a Great City, a classical music series, was founded in 2002 by artistic director Caroline Stoessinger. The series will continue with A Baroque Holiday on Saturday, December 12, 2009 at 7:30pm. Enhanced with readings by Eli Wallach, audiences will come hear a magical concert of music by baroque composers - Bach, Handel, Vivaldi and Purcell - that evokes memories of the joys and comforts of the holiday season. Admission is FREE.
