A not for profit charity founded in 1996 by Wah Keung Chan who dreamed of making the world of classical music available to everyone. From a simple information sheet La Scène Musicale has developed a series of projects attracting public attention in both Canada and overseas. These projects include two magazines (the bilingual, La Scena Musicale, published 10 times a year, with a free distribution of over 42,000 copies mainly in the Montreal, Quebec City, and Ottawa-Hull and The Music Scene, an English language magazine with a free distribution of 42, 000 copies in Toronto and Southern Ontario, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver); an internationally recognized web site, La Scena Musicale Online (www.scena.org); an annual Student Writing Contest recognizing papers on classical music (in French and in English) and the innovative Bring a Teen program whereby selected performing arts groups permit the issue of a free ticket for an adolescent if accompanied by an adult paying the regular price. La Scène Musicale depends heavily on the generosity of its corporate supporters, its modestly paid staff and team of volunteers. The cornerstone of our 2004 fund raising campaign is this benefit concert which has added importance given the Canada Magazine Fund has announced cuts of $30,000 from our funding.
