Le Saint-Laurent de la mer : l'imaginaire, les fantômes et la peur

MONTRÉAL, le 10 juin 2008 – Dans le cadre de l'exposition Peurs bleues, le Musée du Château Ramezay propose, le 14 juin 2008 à 14h, une conférence intitulée Le Saint-Laurent de la mer : l'imaginaire, les fantômes et la peur présentée par Monsieur Gaston Desjardins.

Cette conférence propose un voyage à travers une multitude d'histoires de mer, depuis le littoral de l'Europe atlantique jusqu'aux rives du Saint-Laurent. Les angoisses et la fascination de l'océan, l'attirance des confins et des îles merveilleuses, les récits légendaires du Québec maritime et l'héritage culturel européen seront les sujets fascinants de cet exposé.

Gaston Desjardins est professeur d'histoire à l'Université du Québec à Rimouski (UQAR). Ses activités de recherche et d'enseignement portent principalement sur l'histoire de l'imaginaire maritime au Québec et en Occident. Il a notamment rédigé le livre La mer aux histoires. Voyage dans l'imaginaire maritime occidental. De l'antiquité méditerranéenne jusqu'aux rives du Saint-Laurent, en plus de participer à de nombreux ouvrages collectifs.

Montreal, June 10, 2008 – The Château Ramezay Museum invites you to a conference called The Saint Lawrence of the Sea: The Imaginary, the Ghosts, and Fear on June 14 at 2:00 p.m. held in the Here Be Monsters exhibit. The conference is hosted by Mr. Gaston Desjardins.

This conference proposes a voyage through a multitude of stories about the sea—covering the ocean-span between Europe's Atlantic and the Saint Lawrence riverbank. The distress and fascination caused by the ocean, the allure of the sea lines and the marvellous islands, the legendary accounts of nautical Quebec and the European heritage are fascinating topics that will be covered in this symposium.

Gaston Desjardins is a history professor at the University of Quebec at Rimouski (UQAR). His research and teachings focus primarily on the history of sea tales in Quebec and the West. He is the author of La mer aux histoires. Voyage dans l'imaginaire maritime occidental. De l'antiquité méditerranéenne jusqu'aux rives du Saint-Laurent, in addition to contributing to various collective works.

The Château Ramezay Museum is located right in the heart of Old-Montreal, next to the Champ-de-Mars metro station and the Place Jacques-Cartier, facing Montreal's City Hall.
