Communiquˆ© :

Je me souviens, a series of exploratory music events presented over two more days: 22 and 23 May 2008. La Sala Rossa, 4848, boulevard Saint-Laurent 10$

Introduction
Each Je me souviens evening is made up of two parts. The first will enable the audience to listen to archival recordings of exploratory music (electro-acoustic, electronic and experimental). The second part will present four new works by innovative Quebec composers. To my mind, these composers, all of whom are stimulated by experimenting with sound and by the unexpected things that can arise from improvisation and collaboration, are the worthy heirs of those who, in the 1970s, forged the basis of today's work.

Experiments in electro-acoustic and electronic composition from 1950 until the late 1980s in Quebec were carried out for the most part in universities. McGill University and, more precisely, its Electronic Music Studio, the Universitˆ© de Montrˆ©al, Universitˆ© Laval and later Concordia University were places where knowledge went hand in hand with experimentation. At the same time, at the National Film Board of Canada, Norman McLaren carried out sound experiments by working directly on the film's optical sound track. Maurice Blackburn followed in his footsteps a little later and established the Atelier de conception et de rˆ©alisations sonores at the NFB, which was short-lived but of great importance. These institutions were the only places where professors, students, scholars and composers on the look-out for discoveries could analyze developments in electric and later electronic music using modern instruments and to employ them in musical compositions. With the advent of miniaturisation and personal computers, these practices underwent radical changes.

Je me souviens
invites you to experience a few fragments of this past and to plunge into an exploration of bygone days in order to better hear and understand what is going on today.
