This month in La Scena Musicale
February 2002 - Vol. 7, No. 5
http://www.scena.org/lsm/content.asp?Vol=7&No=5&lan=2

 • On the cover: Canadian Richard Margison has become one of the MET's favourite tenors. Very few music lovers know about his atypical road to success. Margison reflects on the path he has travelled and the dreams he holds for a stellar future.
CD contest: Win Richard Margison's recordings on CBC Records. Details on the Web. Deadline: March 7, 2002

• Baritone Russell Braun is another fine Canadian singer on the rise. This month at the Opéra de Québec, he will take on Don Giovanni for the first time. He talks about the process that led to this new role.

• We publish the first prize essay (English paper) of our Student Writing Contest. "The Baffling Binary Gigue" explains the evolution of the baroque form and its different aspects.

• La cena musicale (The Musical Table) chose a simple recipe that never loses any of its appeal: Bizet's Omelette. Even the simplest concoction can find a musical match.

• Analekta, one of the few "independent" recording companies to stay afloat despite bad times, celebrates its 15th anniversary this month. We spoke to its founder and president, Mario Labbé. (in French only)

• Ever heard of Christoph Graupner? This prolific composer (almost 2000 works!) was a contemporary of Bach and a friend of Handel. Harpsichordist Geneviève Soly has rediscovered several of his forgotten works. New found love! (in French only)

• Valentine's Day is just around the corner. Your beloved finally popped the question? We offer a few guidelines to plan a classical wedding you will never forget. (in French only)

• Plus don't miss our calendar, concert suggestions and CD reviews! Have a great month!

• Download the Acrobat version of the February 2002 issue: http://www.scena.org/pdf-files/sm7-05.pdf

La Scena Musicale e-Cards - Musical Valentines
http://ecard.scena.org

To celebrate St. Valentine's Day, La Scena Musicale brings back the list "Top 10 Musical Valentines", as selected by a poll conducted by La Scena Musicale amongst its contributors and on the web in 2001. Visit http://www.scena.org/lsm/sm6-5/valentin.html to see the list.

A Musical Valentine e-Card based on these selections is now available on the La Scena Musicale website. http://ecard.scena.org

Thanks to EMI Classics and CBC Records, La Scena Musicale is able to use the complete excerpts from their back catalogue. The e-Card has a listen feature for each excerpt, an option to preview of the entire card before it is sent, and a link to the text and translation available on the internet.

Note:
- The sound clip requires Real Player. To download the FREE software visit

La Scena Musicale is pleased to introduce the “Bring a Teen” program to promote the live classical music experience. The live concert experience is one of the best ways for young people to discover the wonders of classical music, and we feel that this kind of program would help build audiences in both the short and long term.
