ATLANTIC PROVINCES

Whether you prefer baroque, chamber or vocal music, festivals on the East coast have a lot to offer!

Prince-Edward Island, despite its small size, plays host to two festivals. While the Charlottetown festival focuses on musical theatre with its best-loved musical Anne of Green Gables, the Indian River Festival is presenting classical musicals in the the beautiful St. Mary's church. Not to be missed is the Mid-Summer Magic Weekend, between August 1 and 4. On August 1, 2 and 3, mezzo-soprano Susan Platts joins the Arthur-Leblanc String Quartet and other musicians in evening programs on themes: the English country garden, Scottish serenade and Isn't it romantic? On August 4, soprano Sung-Ha Shin-Bouey teams up with guitarist Paul Bernard and Este Mundo to present a Spanish evening.

In New Brunswick, baroque music fans will flock to the Festival International de Musique Baroque de Lamèque. Bernard Labadie and his Violons du Roy share the limelight with soprano Karina Gauvin, tenor Michael Slattery and violinist Monica Hugget on July 26 and 27 in works by Handel and Vivaldi (including The Four Seasons).

MONTRÉAL ET ENVIRONS

Depuis maintenant 39 ans, les Concerts populaires de Montréal présentent aux mélomanes des concerts de qualité à prix d'ami. Parmi ceux de cet été, mentionnons entre autres le concert du 19 juin qui mettra en vedette le dynamique Yannick Nézet-Séguin qui cumulera les deux fonctions de chef et de pianiste (programme Mozart). Angèle Dubeau et ses amies de La Pietà proposeront quant à elles leurs plus grands succès le 17 août. (Centre Pierre-Charbonneau)

Les amateurs de musique de chambre contemporaine seront comblés du 2 au 24 août par le festival Jusqu'aux oreilles qui mettra en vedette oeuvres canadiennes et internationales, interprétées entre autre par les chanteurs JAO et les organistes Peter Butler et Patrick Wedd. (Christ Church Cathedral)

À quelques minutes de Montréal, le Festival d'été de la Maison Trestler offre des concerts d'artistes canadiens réputés dans une maison historique qui, à elle seule, vaut le détour. Le tromboniste Alain Trudel et le trompettiste Guy Few y seront le 24 juillet. La semaine, suivante, le 31 juillet, ce sera au tour du pianiste David Jalbert, étoile montante de l'instrument, d'éblouir le public.

Le Festival de Lanaudière célébrera ses 25 ans en grande pompe cette année avec plusieurs concerts mémorables. Les amoureux de l'art lyrique seront particulièrement charmés par le concert du 19 juillet qui mettra en vedette les sopranos Karina Gauvin, Chen Reiss et la contralto Marie-Nicole Lemieux dans une version concert de Orfeo ed Euridice de Gluck. Les Violons du Roy et la Chapelle de Québec seront également de la fête. La semaine suivante, la grande dame du chant Karita Mattila chantera deux fois, une fois avec orchestre le 27 juillet (Wagner, Janácek) et l'autre avec le pianiste Martin Katz le 30 juillet (Schubert, Strauss, Mahler, Duparc et Sibelius).

AILLEURS AU QUÉBEC

Le Festival d'été de Québec célèbre cette année son 35^e anniversaire. Pour clore son Volet classique, le festival a choisi d'inviter le 14 juillet l'OSQ, qui fêtera cet automne son 100^e anniversaire. L'orchestre sous la direction de son chef Yoav Talmi interprétera la Neuvième Symphonie de Beethoven. La soprano Lyne Fortin, la mezzo-soprano Michelle Sutton, le ténor Michael Colvin et le baryton Nathaniel Watson seront les solistes.

Le Festival international du Domaine Forget continue de réunir artistes d'ici et vedettes internationales dans une programmation éclectique qui va du baroque à la musique contemporaine, en passant par le jazz. Le 22 juin, le flûtiste Emmanuel Pahud, le hautboïste Hansjorg Schellenberger et le pianiste Jean Saulnier lanceront officiellement la saison. Le 29 juin, le pianiste André Laplante interprétera deux concertos de Mozart. Le 20 juillet, le pianiste Marc-André Hamelin sera le premier à poser les mains sur le nouveau piano Steinway de la Salle Françoys-Bernier.

Plus d'une trentaine de concerts seront présentés au Festival Orford. Mentionnons le rare passage du Trio Beaux-Arts le 6 juillet, le retour des Vents d'Orford le 26 juillet et la production du Don Giovanni de Mozart, mis en scène par Albert Millaire, les 19 et 21 juillet.

Un nouveau festival de musique de chambre a été mis sur pied dans le Bas-Saint-Laurent, aux îles du Bic. Du 8 au 11 août, quatre thèmes seront abordés lors des concerts de cette première édition: Jeunes artistes, Les vents d'été, Grande soirée romantique et Autour de la guitare.

OTTAWA

Pinchas Zukerman and the NACO present their fourth summer festival. Janina Fialkowska will be the guest soloist on July 11 (Mozart's Concerto in d minor). On July 25, great Bach specialist Angela Hewitt will perform 2 Bach concerti with the orchestra. Children won't want to miss the July 20 program of Judy and David's Symphonic Adventure. Jean-Philippe Tremblay will be conducting that zany search for his baton.

From July 27 to August 10, the Ottawa Chamber Music Society will present 112 concerts during the 9^th annual Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival. Festival passes for adults are only $50 ($20 for students) and give chamber music lovers access to most concerts. Highlights this summer include appearance from the Baltimore Consort, the Leipzig String Quartet, the Gryphon Trio and the London Handel Players. People often line up two hours in advance and some evenings, as many as five concerts are performed at the same time at different venues.

ONTARIO

The Brott Music Festival in Hamilton enters its 15th anniversary summer season. Organ prodigy Felix Hell will perform on two nights, July 9 and 10. The second evening will be a "crawl", a concept of touring a city's outstanding organs in one evening (a three-instrument journey in this case). The last stop will find Hell joining Boris Brott and the National Academy Orchestra for Guillmant's Symphony No.1 for Organ and Orchestra. On August 15, the season's finale will feature Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 2 "Resurrection." 2002 Composer-in-residence Kelly Marie Murphy's A Thousand Natural Shocks will open the concert. Soprano Laura Whalen and contralto Janice Taylor will be the soloists.

Since its inception, the Elora Festival has focused on choral works, both classical and contemporary. It will feature the Elora Festival singers in several concerts, including a grand season launch on July 12 that will feature Bach's Magnificat, Handel's Dixit Dominus and Gloria. Suzie Leblanc, Daniel Taylor, Benjamin Butterfield and Daniel Lichti will be the soloists. On July 26, the Exultate Chamber Singers will join the Elora Festival Singers in works for two choirs.

Canada's premier piano duo, Anagnoson and Kinton, will starr in several of the concerts at the Festival of the Sound. On July 20, they will perform several masterpieces for the piano duo formation, including Mozart's Sonata for 2 pianos and Bartok's Sonata for 2 pianos and percussion. On July 27, they will be joined by pianists John Arpin, Glen Montgomery, Jamie Parker and Alexander Tselyakov in a concert "For the love of the piano."

Avid readers of our Cena musicale section won't want to miss the Niagara International Chamber Music Festival series "Wine and music" and "Music, poetry and wine" to be held at Henry of Pelham, Chateau des Charmes, Stonechurch and Strewn wineries. (July 30- August 21)

WESTERN CANADA

The Banff Centre, splendidly located, presents more than 60 performances during its festival. Sundays this summer will be placed under the Mostly Baroque theme. From July 17 and 20, opera and theatre lovers will unite in a Shakespeare at the Opera series that sounds most promising.

Festival Vancouver presents 50 concerts over 11 days filled with world, baroque, early and classical music, choral performances and jazz jams. Soprano Dawn Upshaw stars in the July 4 concert featuring the Vancouver Symphony under the baton of its maestro, Bramwell Tovey. Rising star violinist Jasper Woods is in town July 7 to 10 for several chamber music performances.

The Vancouver Chamber Music Festival plays host to musicians from 12 different countries this year. Several free concerts are presented, including a very unusual hands-on experience for kids, the Musical Instrument Petting Zoo, on July 30.
