March 1, 2002

Cammac (Canadian Amateur Musicians) has just introduced a new one-week Intensive Vocal Workshop for advanced students from June 23 to 30, 2002. The program allows 24 students to work on song repertoire and receive coaching with respected instructors such as Rosemarie Landry and Michael McMahon. Lectures, round table discussions, Alexander technique and informal concerts will also be available. The workshop is the brainchild of voice teacher Jan Simons, long-time instructor at Cammac, who is organizing the week with fellow McGill University voice teacher Winston Purdy. "There are already some summer workshops in opera, but a workshop on song repertoire is quite unique," said Simons. "We will provide four private lessons on technique, but are not looking to change someone's technique. Being away in the country in Lake MacDonald makes for a great atmosphere." Since this is its first year, the program does not benefit from outside funding. Nonetheless the fee is quite reasonable, $650 to cover tuition, room and board, and taxes. Baroque Summer Institute

The Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra will organize its first Baroque Summer Institute from June 20 to 29, 2002, an intensive 10-day residency in baroque period musicianship with a focus on orchestral and choral performance. The workshop, led by some of the world's leading baroque musicians, is intended for senior students, pre-professionals and professionals, and will be held at the Glenn Gould Professional School in Toronto.
