The ESO laments lost love, the coming of spring, and fickle fate in epic cantata Carmina Burana

Saturday, April 4th ’Äì 8:00 pm; Sunday, April 5th ’Äì 2:00 pm

Edmonton, AB ’Ķ An overwhelming feeling of rhythmic energy will pulsate through Enmax Hall at the Winspear Centre as the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra (ESO) brings to life the primitive tales of love, lust, the pleasures of drinking, and the heightened moods evoked by springtime. The towering epic and 20th century masterpiece Carmina Burana is a compelling drama that explodes with its expressive intensity and stirring poetry.

Joining the ESO and Music Director William Eddins in this grand production are Allene Hackleman (ESO Principal horn), tenor Bonaventura Bottone, soprano Ilana Davidson, baritone Hugh Russell, plus the amalgamation of voices from the Kokopelli & ˆíran choirs, Cantilon Chamber Chorus, and the Ukrainian Male Chorus of Edmonton. Over 200 performers will powerfully denote events of foreboding nature and the capriciousness of fate in O Fortuna, one of the most widely heard and recognized classical music themes of our time.

’ÄúEverything I have written to date, and which you have, unfortunately, printed, can be destroyed. With Carmina Burana, my collected works begin.’Äù ~ Carl Orff, 1937
