La Scena Musicale 2003 PUBLIC'S CHOICE BENEFIT GALA CONCERT

La Scena Musicale invites YOU to participate in LSM's 2003 Public's Choice Benefit Gala !!!

The 2003 PUBLIC'S CHOICE BENEFIT GALA CONCERT will take place on Wednesday, September 17, 2003 at 7:30 p.m. at McGill University's Pollack Hall (555 Sherbrooke Street West., Montreal).

La Scena Musicale (LSM) is a non-profit charitable organization dedicated to the promotion of classical music. Out of a modest newsletter launched in 1996 has sprouted a series of successful projects, including a free monthly magazine called La Scena Musicale, that have captured the interest and support of classical music lovers both in Canada and overseas. (visit our web site at http://www.scena.org/aboutLSM.asp for more information).

The 2003 Public's Choice Benefit Gala Concert is the cornerstone of our 2003-04 fundraising endeavours and our goal for this event is to raise $30,000.  With the recent changes to the Canadian Magazine Fund cutting $30,000 from LSM's budget in 2004, our fundraiser holds even more importance* (see below).  This special evening will showcase vocal music which includes operatic arias and duets performed by artists who have generously agreed to donate their time and talent: John Mac Master (tenor), Annamaria Popescu (mezzo-soprano), and Mirela Tafaj (soprano), with piano accompaniment by Michael McMahon.

Part of the excitement of this fundraising event is that the audience determines the programme, a concept unique in Canada.  Leading up to the July 31 deadline, ticket purchasers and the public are asked to VOTE on the following musical selections.  Please cast YOUR ballot by using the form at the end of this email.  To show our gratitude for your interest and active participation, your name will be included for a draw where one lucky winner will receive 10 full-priced EMI Classics CDs (5 vocal plus 5 instrumental CDs featuring Angela Gheorghiu and Roberto Alagna in the 3-CD set of Bizet's Carmen, Maria Callas, Maxim Vengerov, the St. Lawrence Quartet, Lief Ove Andsnes, Nigel Kennedy, Fabio Biondi and Agathe Martel, for a total value of $200 CAD).

Meanwhile ....

La Scena Musicale extends an invitation to YOU.........

to be part of the audience of LSM's 2003 Public's Choice Benefit Gala !!!

A limited number of VIP tickets ($100 each, including a $65 tax receipt) enables you to meet the guest artists at a reception immediately following the concert. Why not consider offering a memorable evening of musical delights as a corporate hospitality initiative for your organization!

To help promote classical music accessibility to everyone, tickets at $25 each are also available. As a bonus, a limited number of free tickets will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis, to promote LSM's "Bring a Teen!" Program. With the purchase of a regularly-priced ticket, you are be eligible to share the live-concert experience with a teenager for free!!!

A CD of this unique concert is also being planned. If you cannot attend and would like to help LSM and receive a souvenir of the concert, please email gillian@scena.org your coordinates.

p.p.s. We are always looking for volunteers. Please contact me if you can help in any way.

* On July 8, Sheila Copps announced changes to the Canada Magazine Fund that cut funding to 250 free distribution magazines including La Scena Musicale. This means that LSM will loose $30,000 in funding effective April 2004.  Although a new component for Arts and Literary magazines was introduced, at this time, LSM is not eligible because this component requires that such print magazines receive funding from the Canada Council; unfortunately, LSM is not eligible for the Canada Council because it publishes more than 25,000 copies per issue.
