Welcome to our Fifth Year

by Wah Keung Chan / September 1, 2000

With this issue, La Scena Musicale begins its 5th year of service to the classical music community through the publication of our free non-profit print magazine and our acclaimed website La Scena Musicale Online. The good news is that La Scena Musicale is more popular than ever. Demand is high. In Montreal, only 3% of the magazines are returned. As a consequence, we are increasing our distribution to 45,000 copies this month, with 25,000 copies distributed in Montreal and 5,000 copies each in Ottawa and Quebec City, 3,000 copies in the rest of the province of Quebec and nearly 6,000 copies at music schools and record stores across Canada. The magazine is growing too. For September 2000, we have a magazine of 72 pages, meaning more content and more ways to promote classical music.

Our web site has received a lot of attention lately. The February 2000 issue of Chamber Music Magazine selected LSM Online the 3rd Best Music Web site in the world. Just last May, in its special issue "le meilleur du monde / Best of the Web," Le Monde selected La Scena Musicale Online as one of seven web sites in classical music - indeed, we were one of only two sites to receive 4 stars out of 4. Such accolades prompted Montreal Gazette music critic Arthur Kaptainis to feature the site in his column of June 17, 2000.

At La Scena Musicale we are committed to promoting classical music by offering:

* Free concert listings

* Special advertising rates for non-profit arts groups

* Informative, educational, and thought provoking editorial content

* New editorial content such as a Youth page, and regular features on Education, and Health and Technology

* A free community message board on our website

* A press release service on the internet

We are proud of our growth over the last four years but survival in the non-profit cultural community remains an everyday struggle. All of our accomplishments have been made possible by a dedicated team of staff and volunteers, and by you, our loyal readers and advertisers. We hope to continue to bring innovative editorial and marketing ideas to musicians and music lovers. Have a great year.
