THIS MONTH IN LA SCENA MUSICALE

May 1, 1998. The current issue of La Scena Musicale (Vol. 3, No. 7 - May 1998) features a profile of Canadian baritone Gerald Finley, interviewed in New York on the occasion of his Metropolitan Opera debut last autumn. Finley talks about his early training in Ottawa, his close association with the Glyndebourne Opera, and challenges of lieder singing (Finley's first solo disc - Songs of Travel -was released by CBC last month).

* Montreal Chamber Music Festival director Dennis Brott introduces the third annual festival (May 28-June 7, 1998), now one of Montreal's most anticipated classical music events. This year's theme is Words and Music, featuring dramatic readings by Jean Marchand, Veronica Tennant, and Jean-Louis Roux. Tenor Jon Vickers makes a rare public appearance narrating Richard Strauss' Enoch Arden.

* Naxos Records has joined forces with British Columbian archivist and sound engineer Richard Caniell to launch a new budget series of historical Metropolitan Opera recordings dating from the 1940s. Caniell explains how his non-profit private mail order organization became a Naxos partner, and tells us about his other ruling passion - saving British Columbia's forests from destruction.

* Reviews of the Opéra de Montréal's Nozze di Figaro, Opera Lyra's Il Barbiere di Siviglia, the COC's Madama Butterfly and Fidelio, the Opéra de Paris' Billy Budd, Carmen, and Eugene Onegin.

* Book reviews in French of Pierre-Jean Remy's Callas, une vie, David Lelait's Maria Callas: J'ai vécu d'art, j'ai vécu d'amour, and André Gauthier's Puccini.

* Disc reviews of 23 new releases. Discs of the Month for May are J.S. Bach Cantatas for Alto Solo (harmonia mundi HMC 901644) and Henze's Undine (Deutsche Grammophon 453-467-2).
