• Le chef d'orchestre canadien Jacques Lacombe a récemment été nommé chef d'orchestre et directeur artistique de la Philharmonie de Lorraine, poste qu'il occupera à compter du début de la saison 1998-1999. Le maestro Lacombe continue d'occuper son poste de chef d'orchestre adjoint de l'Orchestre symphonique de Montréal jusqu'en mai 1998.

• La première symphonie de Gabriel S. Saab, dont la première performance a été donnée par l'Orchestre symphonique de la Radio de Cracovie, a été diffusée pour la première fois à la radio polonaise (août), puis à Radio Canada MF au cours de la diffusion du programme « La Belle Écouteuse », animé par Danièle Charbonneau (le 9 octobre). La symphonie sera bientôt diffusée à la radio de Genève et sur NPR, au Connecticut. Dans sa Symphonie no 1, Opus 1, une oeuvre d'une durée de 38 minutes composée selon la forme traditionnelle de la sonate en quatre mouvements, les chants liturgiques du Moyen âge et les chants nostalgiques des flûtistes égyptiens évoquent des souvenirs de jeunesse du compositeur. Le docteur Saab déclare que sa symphonie « est une composition très personnelle, d'adressant directement au coeur ». Gabriel S. Saab, âgé de 74 ans travaille activement à la composition de sa deuxième symphonie.

Nominations

Michel Brousseau a été nommé directeur artistique adjoint de l'Orchestre symphonique du Mont-Royal. Il dirigera deux des quatre concerts de la saison 1997-1998. M. Brousseau sera responsable du programme de l'orchestre, ce qui permettra à Jacques Faubert de consacrer du temps à la composition. M. Faubert conserve la direction de la chorale de l'OSMR.

Opéras d'étudiants

Giulio Cesare, de Handel et La Finta giardiniera, de Mozart ouvriront la saison de l'opéra dans les universités canadiennes en novembre. La production Giulio Cesare par le Studio Opera de McGill et l'Ensemble de musique ancienne sera chantée en italien. La production réunit deux distributions et le rôle de Cesare sera interprété tour à tour par le contre ténor Matthew White et la mezzo Nora Sourouzian (du 28 au 30 novembre). La production de l'université de Toronto de Finta giardiniera sera dirigée par Mario Bernardi. Les deux productions seront présentées dans des théâtres de taille moyenne et devraient permettre de découvrir de nouveaux talents. Le Canadian Opera Company Ensemble Studio présentera The Emperor of Atlantis, de Victor Ullmann, les 23, 25, 27 et 29 novembre au Tanenbaum Opera Centre. L'Atelier Lyrique de l'Opéra de Montréal fera une tournée du Québec afin de présenter sa production de La Cenerentola, de Rossini à compter du 23 novembre.

"Opera Quiz" à Montréal

Le 13 novembre prochain, Saturday afternoon at the Opera enregistrera son « Opera Quiz » à 18h45, dans le grand hall de la Place des Arts (Salle des pas perdus) avant la présentation de Madama Butterfly par l'Opéra de Montréal. L'animateur Stuart Hamilton lancera un défi aux experts locaux, notamment Alan Horgan, Richard Turp et Ossama el Naggar. Le jeu radiophonique sera diffusé à CBC Radio Two le 22 novembre, pendant la présentation des Pêcheurs de perles, de Bizet.

Turando(t) ou Turandot ?

L'auteur Patrick Vincent Casali, dans un article paru dans l'édition estivale d'Opera Quarterly, « The Pronunciation of Turandot, Puccini's Last Enigma » offre une démonstration convaincante que le t final du mot Turandot doit rester silencieux.

Conférence Glenn Gould

Tim Page du Washington Post présentera une conférence intitulée « Interpreting Glenn Gould's Vision For Our Time » à l'occasion de l'inauguration de la Glenn Gould Professional School du Royal Conservatory de Toronto dans le cadre de la première série annuelle de conférences. La conférence sera donnée au Consulat général du Canada à New York, jeudi le 13 novembre, à 18 heures. Elle sera diffusée mercredi le 26 novembre, à 21 heures (heure normale de l'est) à CBC Radio Two et diffusée simultanément sur le service Internet de CBC. La Glenn Gould Professional School a été fondée en janvier 1997 afin d'aider au développement d'interprètes et de professeurs.

Prix Gramophone

Chantal Juillet, violoniste montréalaise remporte un gramophone award 1997 dans la catégorie musique de chambre. Ce prix lui a été décerné à Londres pour l'enregisrement du disque intitulé Trois sonates pour violon de Ravel (London 448621-2), avec le pianiste français Pascal Rogé ainsi que le violoncelliste norvégien Truis Mork.

• Canadian conductor Jacques Lacombe has recently been appointed to the post of conductor and artistic director of the Philharmonie de Lorraine, starting with the 1998-99 season. Maestro Lacombe will keep his commitments as assistant conductor of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra until May 1998.

• Gabriel S. Saab's First Symphony, premiered by the Krakow Radio Symphony in March 1997, was first heard on Polish Radio (August), and later played on Radio Canada FM as part of the program "La Belle Écouteuse" hosted by Danièle Charbonneau (October 9). It will soon be broadcast on Geneva Radio and NPR - Connecticut. In the Symphony No.1 in E Minor, Opus 1, a 38-minute work in the traditional four-movement sonata form, liturgical chants of the Middle East and the nostalgic tunes of pastoral Egyptian flute players evoke memories of the composer's youth. Dr. Saab calls it "a very personal composition, flowing from the heart to the heart." The 74-year old Saab is working on his second symphony.

Appointments

Michel Brousseau has been appointed assistant artistic director of the Mont-Royal Symphony Orchestra. He will conduct two of the four concerts in the 1997-98 season. Mr. Brousseau will be responsible for orchestral content, allowing founding artistic director Jacques Faubert time for composing. M. Faubert retains direction of the MRSO Choir.

Student Operas

Handel's Giulio Cesare and Mozart's La Finta giardiniera will open the Opera season at Canadian universities in November. McGill's Opera Studio and the Early Music Ensemble's production of Giulio Cesare sung in Italian consists of two casts, including countertenor Matthew White and mezzo Nora Sourouzian alternating the role of Giulio Cesare. (Nov. 28-30). The University of Toronto's production of Finta giardiniera will be directed by Mario Bernardi. Both productions will be staged in medium-sized theatres and should offer opportunities to discover future talent.

Meanwhile the Canadian Opera Company Ensemble Studio will put on Viktor Ullmann's The Emperor of Atlantis Nov. 23, 25, 27, 29 at the Tanenbaum Opera Centre, Toronto. Opéra de Montréal's Atelier Lyrique will be touring their production of Rossini's La Cenerentola throughout Quebec beginning Nov. 23.

Opera Quiz comes to Montreal

On November 13, Saturday Afternoon at the Opera will tape their Opera Quiz at 6:45 p.m. in the main lobby of Place des Arts (Salle des Pas Perdus) before the Opéra de Montréal's production of Madama Butterfly. Quizmaster Stuart Hamilton will be on hand to challenge Montreal area experts including Alan Horgan, Richard Turp and Ossama el Naggar. The quiz will be broadcast on CBC Radio Two on November 22nd during the afternoon feature broadcast of L'OdM's production of Bizet's Pearl Fishers.

Is it Turando[t] or Turandot?

In the article "The Pronunciation of Turandot, Puccini's Last Enigma" in the Summer '97 issue of Opera Quarterly, writer Patrick Vincent Casali's historic review of Puccini's Turandot gives a convincing case for a silent final t in the pronunciation of the word Turandot.

Glenn Gould Lecture

Tim Page of The Washington Post will present a lecture entitled "Interpreting Glenn Gould's Vision For Our Time" to inaugurate the Glenn Gould Professional School of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto's First Annual Lecture Series. The lecture will be held at the Canadian Consulate General in New York on Thursday, November 13 at 6 p.m. The lecture will be broadcast on Wednesday, November 26 at 9 p.m. (EST) on CBC Radio 2 and simulcast on the CBC Internet service. The Glenn Gould Professional School was founded in January 1997 to help form the performers and the teachers of the future.

Gramophone Award

Montreal violinist Chantal Juillet has won a 1997 Gramophone Award in the chamber music category for her recording Three violin sonatas of Ravel (London 448621-2) with French pianist Pascal Rogé and Norwegian cellist Truis Mork.
