SMCQ Pays Hommage to Ana Sokolovic
Composer Ana Sokolovic (1968- ) will be celebrated during the third edition of the SMCQ’s Hommage Series in 2011-12. The Series pays tribute to one Quebec composer each year through a series of concerts, outreach initiatives, and awareness programs. Sokolovic follows Gilles Tremblay and Claude Viver and will be the first woman and first non-native Quebecer to be fêted. Originally born in Belgrade, Serbia, Sokolovic moved to Montreal to complete her master’s at the Université de Montréal and married composer Jean Lesage. Sokolovic won the CBC National Young Composer’s Competition and has also won awards at the SOCAN Young Composer’s Competition. In 1996, she represented Quebec at the Unesco International Rostrum of Composers. One of Sokolovic’s recent commisions is from The Banff Centre and CBC for the 2010 Banff International String Quartet Competition.   CC

Composer Denis Gougeon wins International Contest
Denis Gougeon has won the $25,000 first prize at the International Composition Contest at Shanghai during the world exposition 2010. Second and third prizes go to Krystof Maratka of France and Simon Steen-Anersen of Denmark. Each contestant composed a six-minute piece featuring traditional Chinese instruments for the full orchestra. The contest was organized by Radio France and the Shanghai Media Group. Eight Quebec musicians were assisted by the SMCQ to compete in Shanghai.   ST

Eckhardt-Gramatté Winner is Pianist Claudia Chan
In May, 20-year-old pianist, Claudia Chan of Ottawa won the Eckhardt-Gramatté National Music Competition in piano held in Brandon, Manitoba based on her performance of Karen Sunabacka’s Curlicue. Prizes include a recital tour across Canada with $5,000 in performance fees. Her upcoming November 14 performance in Winnipeg will be broadcast on CBC radio. In the past, Chan has also won the Eastman International Competition, the Bosendorfer competition and the Canadian Music Competition, and has performed solo and chamber recitals across Canada.   ST
