L'engouement étant à l'Asie depuis quelques années,
je vous propose donc comme suggestions de cadeaux deux CD de musique chinoise :
une musique de film et une parution québécoise récente. La bande sonore du film
« Hero », du réalisateur chinois Zhang Yimou, a été écrite par le célèbre
compositeur chinois Tan Dun, dont la musique est souvent considérée comme
hybride. Il utilise ici un leitmotiv interprété au violon par le célèbre
violoniste Itzhak Perlman. Ce leitmotiv apporte une continuité sonore à la trame
visuelle ; il hante l'auditeur tout au long du film et appuie admirablement le
scénario, très bien secondé par le célèbre ensemble de percussion japonaise
Kodo. Bien que ce soit un film fantastique, la musique de Tan Dun nous permet de
faire le pont entre les personnages irréels et notre réalité
d'auditeurs.
Comme deuxième suggestion, je vous propose le
nouveau CD de Lise Daoust et Liu Fang chez Atma. Lise Daoust est une superbe
flûtiste très connue des mélomanes québécois; pour sa part, Liu Fang est une
étonnante interprète tant du pipa (le luth chinois) que du guzheng (la plus
connue des diverses cithares sur table chinoises). La sonorité très pure et même
éthérée de Lise Daoust se marie admirablement aux sonorités envoûtantes et
exotiques du pipa et du guzheng chinois. Ils nous offrent de superbes mélodies
chinoises, dont quelques-unes sont millénaires, ainsi qu'un arrangement de «
Greensleeves », datant du xviiie siècle, à la flûte et au guzheng. La
sérénité de ces mélodies chinoises en fait un cadeau parfait pour le temps des

 L'imagination de Gilles Vigneault ne fléchit
aucunement avec l'âge, tel qu'on peut le voir et l'entendre avec cette nouvelle
parution d'un livre-disque de chansons, contes et comptines pour enfants... de
tous les âges. Lancé à la mi-octobre, le livre fait déjà un tabac auprès des
enfants et même des adultes qui se laissent facilement envoûter. Il faut dire
qu'il contient une version remaniée de la célèbre « Danse à St-Dilon », qui
penche un tantinet vers le rap. La chanson est admirablement illustrée par
Stéphane Jorisch, comme les autres chansons et contes. Le CD contient en plus
des fichiers informatiques en format PDF des partitions et des illustrations.
Vigneault n'y chante malheureusement pas. Cependant, on y entend une brochette
d'excellents artistes québécois, parmi lesquels Ariane Moffatt, Garou, Luce
Dufault, Luc De Larochellière, Martin Léon, Pierre Lapointe et Jessica
Vigneault, fille du poète, qui a participé à l'écriture de huit chansons de ce
projet. La superbe réalisation est de Paul Campagne. Dans la première chanson,
on entend plusieurs instruments ethniques, dont le koto japonais, la mandoline,
le bouzouki grecque, la harpe et autres. Ce livre-disque démontre l'amour de
Vigneault à l'égard des enfants. Il est difficile de rester indifférent au
charme de ces chansons et comptines. BD

In 2003, the Noted New York jazz critic Gary
Giddins hung up his pen after 29 years spent writing for that city's noted
weekly tabloid, The Village Voice.
 Over the years his columns have been
serialized in book format, the present one being the fourth and last in the
series. In it, he covers his last 14 years of writings: interestingly, the book
is divided into two equal parts, the first extending to the end of the century,
the second covering just the last three years. In so doing he gives clear
emphasis to the subtitle of the book, its main heading being the title of his
column. Of the 156 pieces collected here, only 16 did not appear in The
Village Voice. The introduction serves as a kind of personal memoir, in
which Giddins talks about his lifelong love affair with jazz. Basically, the
bulk of these three to four page essays consists of his own assessments of
musicians, past and present, and their performances at special concerts or
festivals. In isolated cases he tackles other issues and people, wether it be to
comment on styles or eras, or to pronounce the eulogies of musicians and fellow
critics. From his Big Apple vantage point, it's clear that close to all
musicians featured are countrymen; in fact only three Europeans show up (Han
Bennink, Marital Solal and Louis Sclavis) and one Canadian (the now long gone
and legendary tenorman Brian Barley). If truth be told, we have a selection of
jazz stories (American, that is) but also the story of its author all rolled up
in this thick tome which, given its varied contents, can be read at one's own
whims. A fine and informative read for the jazz lover at heart. Marc

Pour saluer Abbado
On croyait bien le connaître, mais Claudio
Abbado a réussi à nous surprendre par une réinterprétation de Mahler et de
Debussy qui nous les fait entendre différemment. Un récent album de deux disques
(DG 477 5082) réunit ses deux compositeurs préférés. Il nous livre sa nouvelle
vision, toute chatoyante de lumière, de La Mer et fait resplendir
la Deuxième de Mahler d'une spiritualité qui accède à une sorte de
sérénité. L'Orchestre du Festival de Lucerne (dont certains membres se nomment
-- excusez du peu ! -- Sabine Meyer, Albrecht Mayer, Emmanuel Pahud, Renaud
Capuçon, Natalia Gutman...) suit le maître avec un élan irrésistible. Un
enregistrement hors norme à posséder et à faire connaître. « À l'époque, en
1965, je ne connaissais pas encore toute son œuvre, mais je savais déjà que
Mahler serait pour moi une référence permanente », confiait Abbado à Robert
Parienté, auteur de la Symphonie des Chefs aux Éditions de La
Martinière (voir LSM, vol. 9.10, juillet-août 2004,p. 51). En
quelque soixante-dix entrevues, sans chercher à être exhaustif, cet ouvrage nous
fait prendre contact avec des chefs connus ou moins connus, mais de façon
toujours vivante. De nombreuses photos accompagnent un texte écrit avec clarté
et exempt de toute pédanterie. Les amateurs du genre seront comblés.

The CPO Gift Solution
Finding a suitable present for the classical
collector who 'has everything' can be a challenge. For this seasonal task, the
German independent record label, Classic Produktion Osnabrück
(cpo), offers a wealth of rewarding rarities on compact disc.
Artistic, technical and presentation values are maintained at the highest of
standards. Some excellent examples (all four-star performances and better)
released during the second half of 2004 were fully auditioned and can be
confidently recommended.
Ferdinand Ries was a close colleague
of Beethoven. Howard Griffiths and the Zurich Chamber Orchestra concluded their
Ries symphony cycle with dashing accounts of Nos 7 and 8 on the first Hybrid
Super Audio (SACD) released by cpo (999 904-2). The Anglo-French
composer, Georges Onslow, was active during the same period. The NDR
Radio Philharmonic under Johannes Goritzki perform symphonies (Nos 1 and 3) of
comparable merit by Onslow (999 747-2). Symphonies Nos 8 to 11 by Joachim
Raff (1822-1882) represent the succession of the seasons and are given
superb, mid-Romantic readings by Werner Andreas Albert and the Philharmonia
Hungarica in a bargain priced double-disc set (999 536-2).
The young Slovenian conductor, Marko Letonja leads
the Basel SO in the first installment of a cycle of the symphonic works by the
great Dalmatian-born maestro, Felix Weingartner. Weingartner's Symphony
No 1 and König Lear symphonic poem (999 981-2/Hybrid SACD) reveal
musical works of real stature. As Christoph von Dohnanyi remarked,"In the last
resort, it doesn't matter how good -- or bad -- a symphony by Klemperer is... it
is a process he has gone through and a process he is better able to grasp." That
statement is substantiated by Alun Francis and the Rhineland-Pfalz State
Philharmonic with their recording (999 987-2) of symphonic works by Otto
Klemperer.
Alun Francis completed his cycle of the
symphonies of genial serialist Ernst Toch (1887-1964) with Nos 1 and 4
(999 774-2). Francis conducted the Berlin RSO. Carl St.Clair directs the
Stuttgart RSO in the continuing series devoted to Toch's near-contemporary, the
doyen of Brazilian composers, Heitor Villa-Lobos. Symphony No 7 of 1945
is coupled with Sinfonietta No 1 (999 713-2). For modernism verging on
steel-fisted contemporary, it would be difficult to find a more intricately
gritty composer than Israel's Joseph Tal. Tal was born in Poland in 1910
and attended the 2003 recording sessions for his Symphonies Nos 4-6. Israel
Yinon directs the NDR Radio Philharmonic (999 922-2). W.S.

 On a tout dit de lui et tout est vrai...
Cocteau le voleur, l'emprunteur ou le caméléon (« Il est plus beau que
s'il était authentique s'exclamera-t-il devant un faux Greco, tout
mensonge lui paraissant a priori plus intéressant que la réalité qu'il masque
»)... Mais aussi Cocteau le Prince de Paris, l'étourdissant, le génie... Le
poète, le romancier, le peintre, le sculpeur, le cinéaste et le chef
d'orchestre du groupe des Six. Ce barman de bruits
(Breton), ce poète-orchestre (Aragon), ce Parmentier du
jazz-band (Tzara), celui qui mit des machines à écrire et des coups de
pistolet dans la Parade d'Erik Satie, bref, Jean Cocteau ! Il
semble avoir traversé la vie 10 fois plus vite que tout le monde tant sa
production est diversifiée. Et sa biographie est celle de Paris. Tout le monde
est là, riches bourgeois et peintres bohèmes, Nijinsky et Marcel Proust...
Claude Arnaud livre ici un travail de recherche impressionnant et les
métamorphoses successives de son sujet font du récit de sa vie un véritable

Adorno. Une
biographie

Pour ceux qui se sont arrachés les cheveux à
la lecture de Philosophie de la nouvelle musique d'Adorno ou
d'autres de ses écrits, cette suggestion de cadeau peut paraître ironique. Il
est vrai que ce livre ne s'adresse pas à tous. Mais si vous avez un intérêt pour
la pensée d'un des grands philosophes du siècle dernier, vous trouverez cette
biographie instructive non seulement sur l'homme, mais surtout sur la genèse et
l'évolution de sa pensée. Et avouons qu'il est rassurant de voir qu'un être
humain véritable, doté d'humour, et grand séducteur (!) se cache derrières ces
textes. Müller-Doohm a fait un travail d'enquête colossal, en abordant Adorno
surtout à travers ses relations avec ses contemporains (notamment Walter
Benjamin, Kracauer, Thomas Mann, Alban Berg...), grâce aux écrits d'Adorno, à sa
correspondance, à des transcriptions de ses cours et conférences, etc. La somme
d'information est immense, les références à la pensée d'autres philosophes
extrêmement riches, et un index permet de s'y retrouver. Évidemment, le travail
musicologique d'Adorno, son travail de compositeur ainsi que son apprentissage
auprès d'Alban Berg sont longuement abordés. Mais surtout, la mise en contexte
de sa pensée aide à comprendre ses prises de position parfois radicales.
